Speaker Profiles
Dr. David Bloomfield
Originally from Belfast, N. Ireland, David has worked in the field of conflict and peacebuilding for 30 years as a trainer, practitioner, policy advisor, analyst, author, academic, consultant and NGO director in a variety of contexts.
Originally the director of a small reconciliation organisation in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, since 1990 he has lived in England, the US, Sweden and Germany, and travelled widely in many conflict areas including Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Israel/Palestine.
He has worked as an academic at the universities of Harvard (US), Ulster (N.Ireland) and Bradford (UK). From 2001-2004, he was Senior Executive and Director of the Conflict Management Programme at the intergovernmental organisation International IDEA in Stockholm, and from 2004-2007, he was director of the Berghof Research Centre for Conflict Management in Berlin.
After 17 years abroad, he returned to Ireland in December 2007 to take up the post of CEO at the Glencree Centre, Ireland’s leading peacebuilding NGO which offers a wide range of practical peacemaking programmes in Ireland and around the world.
He holds an MA and PhD in peace studies from Bradford University (UK), and has published several books, articles, chapters and monographs, on theory, practice and policy in peacebuilding, reconciliation, conflict transformation, the Irish conflict, and other peace-related issues.
Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy
Sister Stanislaus Kennedy is a Religious Sister of Charity and one of Ireland’s best-known social innovators. Originally from Co. Kerry, she helped establish Kilkenny Social Services in the 1960’s. In the 1970’s, she was a founder member of the National Federation of Youth Clubs and CARE and co-founded the School of Education in Kilkenny.
In the 1980’s she founded and is Life President of Focus Ireland. In the 1990’s Sr. Stan founded and is a Director on the Board of the Sanctuary. In 2001, she founded Social Innovations Ireland from which the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Young Social Innovators emerged. She is on the Board of the Community Foundation for Ireland. She is also a writer and some of her books include; Now is the time: A Bundle of Blessings: Gardening the Soul; and Seasons of the Day and most recently Stillness through my prayers, an expanded edition of Now is the time, and Moments of Stillness.
Sr Stanislaus has received numerous awards and tributes for her outstanding work for the marginalized in society and some of those are as follows:
- 1981 ‘Kerry Person of the Year’
- 1982 Honorary Doctorate in Law from Trinity College Dublin
- 1993 University of New York Special Honour for commitment to the disadvantaged in Ireland
- 1996 The Lord Mayor of Dublin’s Award .
- 2003 Honorary Doctorate in Law from the National University of Ireland.
- 2004 Meteor Awards prestigious ‘Humanitarian of the Year’
- 2005 Honorary Degree of Doctor of the Open University.
